Cyclosporiasis cases reported across multiple U.S. states
What it is. Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal illness caused by the microscopic parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis, spread through food or water contaminated with the parasite. Per CDC, past U.S. outbreaks have most often been linked to fresh produce such as herbs, berries, and leafy greens. It does not usually spread directly from person to person.
Common symptoms. Watery diarrhea — often prolonged, and it can go away and come back — loss of appetite, weight loss, stomach cramps, bloating, nausea, and fatigue. Symptoms usually begin about a week after exposure.
When to contact a doctor. Diarrhea lasting more than a few days, blood in stool, high fever, or signs of dehydration. Routine stool tests do not always detect Cyclospora, so mention it specifically to your healthcare provider.
